The 2026 UCI Road Cycling World Championships will take place in Montreal, Canada, featuring a full week of competition from September 20 to September 27. The event brings together the world’s best cyclists for both time trial and road race disciplines across men’s and women’s categories.

Throughout the week, national teams will compete in 13 separate events spanning various age groups, along with a Team Time Trial Mixed Relay. The climax arrives on the final weekend, with the elite women’s road race covering 180.4km on Saturday, September 26, followed by the elite men’s 273.4km road race on Sunday, September 27. The winners will earn the prestigious rainbow stripes and wear them in WorldTour elite competitions for the entire following year.

For those wanting to follow every moment of the action from anywhere in the world, viewing guides for the Montreal Championships are available. Below you’ll find the complete event schedule with times listed in Montreal’s Eastern Daylight Time zone, which runs 4 hours behind GMT, plus detailed route information and the riders expected to challenge for victory.

Event Schedule

All times are local (GMT -4 hours)

Course Breakdown

Road Races

The road race courses are built around two distinct circuits. The longer events, including both elite men’s and elite women’s races, begin with an extended loop starting from Montreal’s Brossard district. Competitors then cross the Samuel de Champlain bridge before entering a circuit through central Montreal. Elite men will complete this circuit 12 times, while elite women will ride 8 laps. Shorter competitions, such as the men’s U23 road race, are contested entirely on repeated laps of the more compact Mont Royal circuit.

Time Trials

The time trial courses wind through central Montreal on a technical circuit, with shorter races cutting out the more distant sections of the full route. Every time trial concludes at the same finishing line in Parc Jeanne-Mance, which also serves as the finish for the road races.

Contenders to Watch

Even without Tadej Pogačar, who claimed road race victories in 2024 and 2025, the field remains packed with exceptional talent.

Remco Evenepoel stands out as the man to beat in the individual time trial. The Belgian has held the rainbow jersey in this discipline since 2023 and shows no sign of giving it up based on his recent performances. He’s also a serious threat in the men’s road race, though he was recently outpaced by Isaac del Toro at the GP de Montreal, another rider generating significant buzz.

Unlike Evenepoel, the Mexican rider lacks a powerful supporting squad for the road race. Wout van Aert provides another strong option for Belgium. Following his two stage victories and points classification win at the Vuelta a España, he appears to be at the top of his game.

In the women’s road race, Demi Vollering is the overwhelming favorite to capture her first rainbow jersey. The Dutch rider has already claimed both the Tour de France Femmes and Giro d’Italia Women this season, along with numerous one-day victories including the Women’s Tour of Flanders and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. She also benefits from a formidable Netherlands team in the road race. A victory in the women’s elite time trial shouldn’t be discounted either.

For British cycling fans, Zoe Bäckstedt will be one to follow closely in both the elite women’s time trial, where she’s a serious contender, and the road race. Tom Pidcock will spearhead Team GB’s elite men’s challenge with solid support from his teammates. He has balanced road racing with cross-country mountain biking in 2026 and currently holds the XC Olympic MTB world championship title.
