Whaleroad Debuts 14-Speed Wireless Drivetrain at Sea Otter Europe

At the Sea Otter Europe trade show in Girona, a new wireless groupset from Chinese manufacturer Whaleroad drew attention. The system, named R7, stands out for its 14-speed cassette—a configuration that remains rare in the cycling world. The R7 was displayed mounted on a Cykl Graave bike, offering showgoers a firsthand look at the setup.

Whaleroad is not the first Chinese company to explore 14-speed compatibility. Wheeltop’s EDS derailleurs can also be set up for as many as 14 gears. However, this marks the first occasion where such a drivetrain has been shown paired with a genuine 14-speed cassette, making it a notable step forward.

Antoine Delmur, who serves as founding director of Cykl, shared his thoughts on the R7: “We’ve been putting it through its paces for some time now, and up to this point, it has genuinely exceeded our expectations.”

The cassette delivers a 418 percent gear range, with the smallest sprocket having 11 teeth and the largest featuring 46 teeth. Importantly, it is designed to work with a standard Shimano HG freehub body, so riders won’t need to adopt any proprietary mounting standards. To accommodate the additional gears within the same space, the cogs toward the smaller end of the cassette are noticeably thinner than usual.

The R7 rear derailleur operates wirelessly and draws power from a detachable 725mAh battery. According to Whaleroad, a single charge can support up to 1,500 kilometers of riding. The battery includes a USB-C charging port, and the company claims that just 10 minutes of charging provides enough juice for 200 kilometers. Through a companion app, users can tailor their shifting preferences and install firmware updates.

Much like Wheeltop’s EDS, the Whaleroad derailleur can be configured to work with cassettes ranging from three to 14 speeds. It also comes equipped with an adjustable clutch, IP67-rated weather sealing, and a feature Whaleroad calls an “Impact Protection System,” which allows the derailleur to reposition itself after taking a hit.

The emergence of another 14-speed option arrives as major drivetrain brands continue to push sprocket counts higher. SRAM’s top-tier road groupset still uses 12 speeds, though its 1x Red XPLR AXS gravel groupset advanced to 13 speeds in 2024, combining a 10-46t cassette with a direct-mount rear derailleur. Campagnolo went further in 2025 by introducing Super Record 13, the first 2×13-speed wireless electronic road groupset. Shimano’s current Dura-Ace R9200 groupset remains at 12 speeds, but that may be about to change.

What appears to be the not-yet-released Dura-Ace R9300 groupset has already been observed in action at the Vuelta a España running a 2×13-speed configuration. Earlier leaks, such as a puzzling 13th sprocket showing up in Shimano’s E-Tube app, have added weight to the idea that Shimano is preparing to make the jump to 13 speeds. Even if that happens, Whaleroad’s 14-speed system would still hold a one-sprocket advantage over the flagship drivetrains from the industry’s biggest names.

Of course, whether riders actually require that extra gear is a separate matter entirely.
