Nexon in Talks with Blizzard to Develop New StarCraft Sequel

South Korean gaming giant Nexon is reportedly in licensing negotiations with Blizzard Entertainment to develop the next installment in the iconic StarCraft franchise, according to Korean media reports on September 2nd. If an agreement is reached, Nexon would take the helm in creating the first fully new, official sequel to the series in 16 years.

Neither company has officially confirmed the partnership, and contract discussions remain in early stages. The potential deal has nonetheless stirred significant excitement among fans of the legendary real-time strategy (RTS) series, which has maintained a remarkably loyal following since its debut nearly three decades ago.

Originally released in 1998, StarCraft became a cultural phenomenon in South Korea, where it helped ignite the country’s esports scene and PC bang (internet café) culture. Even today, the original game continues to rank among the top ten most-played titles in Korean internet cafes, a testament to its enduring popularity and competitive depth. Its expansion, Brood War, remains a staple in professional gaming circuits, particularly in South Korea, where it enjoys near-legendary status.

A new sequel would mark a major milestone for the franchise. The last mainline entry, StarCraft II, launched in 2010, with its final expansion released in 2015. Since then, Blizzard has shifted its focus to other projects, leaving the RTS community hungry for fresh content. Over the years, the series has not seen a proper continuation, and fan speculation about a potential revival has repeatedly surfaced without concrete developments.

For Nexon, known for titles such as MapleStory and Dungeon & Fighter, securing the rights to StarCraft would represent a significant strategic expansion. The company has increasingly looked to leverage established Western franchises while strengthening its portfolio in the global market. Should the deal go through, Nexon would be responsible for both development and likely worldwide publishing, giving the Korean firm a major foothold in the global RTS arena.

Industry analysts note that Blizzard has been more open to licensing its intellectual properties in recent years, particularly as parent company Activision Blizzard faces increased pressure to monetize its deep catalog of beloved franchises. The move to partner with Nexon—a company with deep experience in online multiplayer games and live-service models—could also signal a new direction for how classic RTS titles are designed and sustained.

While no timeline has been provided for when an official announcement might be made, the mere prospect of a new StarCraft game has already sparked widespread discussion online. Enthusiasts are debating everything from potential story directions to whether the new title would retain traditional RTS mechanics or explore modern twists.

For now, the future of StarCraft remains uncertain but undeniably promising. With the franchise having shaped competitive gaming for generations, the possibility of a Nexon-developed sequel could reignite global interest in a genre that, while niche today, once dominated the gaming landscape. Should negotiations conclude successfully, the beloved universe of Terran, Zerg, and Protoss may soon expand onto a new battlefield, bringing both nostalgia and innovation to millions of players worldwide. Until then, fans watch closely, awaiting a signal that one of gaming’s most cherished sagas is ready to rise again.
