Pirelli Unveils Scorpion Gravity MTB Tyres with F1-Derived Compounds and Fabien Barel Collaboration
Pirelli has expanded its mountain bike tyre lineup with the launch of the Scorpion Gravity range, bringing Formula 1-inspired rubber technology to the trails. The new collection features three distinct tread designs, four casing options, and three rubber compounds that carry the same names and colour coding as those used in Pirelli’s Formula 1 tyres.
The Italian manufacturer worked closely with three-time downhill world champion Fabien Barel, who contributed “direct input” throughout the development process. According to Barel, the Scorpion Gravity tyres deliver “the kind of confidence you notice within the first few turns.”
Three Tread Patterns Inspired by Nature
Each of the three tread patterns takes its name from a scorpion species and has been engineered to excel in terrain that mirrors each creature’s natural habitat. The Black Sting is tailored for dry, hard-packed surfaces. The Emperor serves as a versatile all-rounder suitable for mixed conditions. The Red Claw is optimised for loose dirt and muddy trails.
The Emperor replaces Pirelli’s previously named RACE M tread, while the Red Claw takes the place of the RACE T model. This naming shift brings a more distinctive identity to the range while maintaining the performance characteristics riders have come to expect.
Four Casing Options for Every Riding Style
Pirelli offers four casing choices, giving riders flexibility to balance weight against durability depending on their discipline. These casings span applications from trail riding through to downhill, enduro, and even freeride. All four are declared eMTB-compatible.
The lightest option, ProWALL, incorporates sidewall protection and tips the scales at a claimed 700-900g. It prioritises climbing efficiency while still delivering dependable reliability and descending capability.
The HardWALL casing adds extra reinforcement, with Pirelli claiming a weight range of 900-1,100g. This option appears geared toward aggressive trail riders who want added protection against pinch flats.
For enduro, bike park, and freeride use, the DualWALL casing features a dual-ply construction and weighs between 1,100-1,300g.
At the top of the range, the DH+ casing is built specifically for downhill racing. It uses a tougher dual-ply carcass with additional sidewall and bead reinforcement. Pirelli states that DH+ tyres weigh from 1,300g to over 1,500g.
Formula 1 Technology Meets Mountain Biking
Pirelli currently serves as the exclusive tyre supplier for Formula 1 and will take on the same role for MotoGP starting in 2027. The Scorpion MTB range borrows the compound naming system and colour-coded sidewall graphics directly from Pirelli’s F1 programme.
The hardest of the three compounds carries the name ‘Medium’ and features yellow lettering. It aims to strike a balance between grip and longevity. The middle option, called ‘Soft,’ is identified by red text on the sidewall. The softest compound, ‘SuperSoft,’ uses purple lettering and is described by Pirelli as offering maximum grip and vibration damping.
Pirelli suggests running the SuperSoft on the front tyre, though it can also be fitted to the rear for competitive racing.
Availability and Pricing
The new Pirelli Scorpion Black Sting, Emperor, and Red Claw tyres are available now through the brand’s online store and select bike retailers.
