Europe Sees Launch of Switch 2 with Replaceable Battery, Slightly Heavier with Reduced Battery Life

On September 3, Spanish gaming outlet Nintendúo reported that a new version of the Nintendo Switch 2 featuring a user-replaceable battery has begun appearing on European store shelves. While visually identical to the original launch model, this iteration introduces subtle but meaningful changes under the hood.

The most notable difference lies in the hardware specifications. The updated console tips the scales at 545 grams when paired with the Joy-Con 2 controllers, marking an 11-gram increase over the standard version. Internally, the battery capacity has been trimmed to 5,172 mAh—slightly down from the original’s 5,220 mAh—which translates to a marginal loss of roughly a few minutes of gameplay time per charge. For most players, this reduction is unlikely to be noticeable in everyday use.

Consumers can identify the new model through several physical markers. The packaging barcode begins with the prefix “OSM,” while the device’s serial number starts with “HLE.” Additionally, a quick inspection of the screws located next to the JC2 connector on the console body reveals a switch to a standard tri-point screw design, replacing the proprietary fasteners used in earlier units.

This shift to common Phillips-head screws is a deliberate move to simplify the battery replacement process. According to the report, Nintendo plans to release official replacement kits, complete with comprehensive warranty-compatible instructional guides, enabling owners to swap out the battery themselves with relative ease.

The move aligns with broader industry pressure toward repairability and sustainability, as consumers and regulators increasingly demand longer product lifecycles and reduced electronic waste. While the changes are modest in scope, they signal Nintendo’s responsiveness to these concerns without compromising the core design or performance of its popular hybrid console. The new version is currently rolling out across European markets, with no announcement yet regarding availability in other regions.
