FREELANDER officially launched its new flagship SUV, the FREELANDER 8, on September 3, with the six-seat version available in three trims. The PRO edition carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price starting at 319,900 RMB, while a limited-time promotional price brings it down to 299,900 RMB. The MAX version is priced from 359,900 RMB officially, with a promotional price of 339,900 RMB, and the range-topping MAX+ trim starts at 399,900 RMB, available for 379,900 RMB during the promotional window. Customers who place a 5,000 RMB deposit before September 30, 2026, can unlock purchase benefits valued at up to 176,000 RMB.

Alongside the six-seat model, FREELANDER also introduced the five-seat configuration of the 8. The five-seat PRO starts at 309,900 RMB officially, or 289,900 RMB with the promotional offer. The MAX trim is listed at 349,900 RMB, with a limited-time price of 329,900 RMB, while the MAX+ is officially priced at 389,900 RMB and offered at 369,900 RMB during the promotion. Both seating configurations come standard with 156 core features and qualify for the same maximum 176,000 RMB in purchase benefits.

The company describes the FREELANDER 8 as an expression of “new tech luxury,” drawing on 78 years of SUV design and all-terrain engineering heritage while integrating China’s leading new energy and intelligent vehicle technologies. Rather than engaging in a spec-sheet arms race, the model aims to establish a comprehensive flagship standard across design, luxury, intelligence, terrain capability, and safety. Wen Fei, Global CEO of FREELANDER and Executive Vice President of Chery Jaguar Land Rover, emphasized that the vehicle is engineered to excel across all dimensions rather than dominate in any single category. He noted that the FREELANDER 8 packages what he described as 1 million RMB worth of intelligent technology, 2 million RMB worth of all-terrain capability, and 10 million RMB worth of safety standards into a luxury new energy SUV priced between 300,000 and 400,000 RMB—ensuring customers never pay purely for brand prestige.

All 156 core specifications come as standard equipment from the base trim upward, covering electric powertrain, intelligent cabin, driver assistance, all-terrain systems, and luxury amenities. The vehicle features a standard 800V high-voltage extended-range platform with dual-motor all-wheel drive, delivering a combined output of 610 kW and peak torque of 813 N·m, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds. It is equipped with a CATL all-terrain battery pack offering 60.3 kWh of capacity, providing a CLTC electric-only range of 310 kilometers, and supports 6C ultra-fast charging.

The FREELANDER 8 is the first luxury new energy brand to make Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 intelligent driving system standard across all trims. The system is paired with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 automotive-grade chip and a 46.3-inch Mini LED display. The PRO and MAX trims feature the ADS 5 Enhanced Edition with Huawei’s limera solution, while the MAX+ trim upgrades to the Ultra Edition, which includes a 896-line dual-optical-path LiDAR capable of detecting objects as small as 14 centimeters at distances up to 120 meters. Standard highway NCA functionality averages over 1,500 kilometers of autonomous driving between manual interventions, and the assisted parking system supports more than 160 parking scenarios.

The cabin debuts the ENLIGHT OS, an all-new intelligent cockpit system built on the Snapdragon 8397 chip, offering 12 times the NPU computing power of the previous generation. The system incorporates a full-modal on-device large model designed for human-like analysis, comprehension, and perception, supporting multi-command voice recognition and contextual reasoning based on over 200 driving events. A memory module enables the vehicle to learn user habits and preferences, offering 300-plus personalized memory tags. The FREELANDER 8 also integrates an AI agent supporting 25-plus customizable smart scenarios and works with an ecosystem of over 200 partners for end-to-end service automation.

On the all-terrain front, the FREELANDER 8 features the i-ATS intelligent all-terrain system co-developed with Huawei, utilizing LiDAR and camera inputs to assess terrain 10 to 15 meters ahead. The system offers nine selectable terrain modes with switch times of 0.5 seconds. Hardware includes three locking differentials, a 250 kW two-speed rear electric drive, closed-chamber dual-cylinder air suspension with CCD continuous damping control, and a rear-wheel steering system with ±10 degrees of articulation. The vehicle delivers 900 mm of water-fording capability, can handle 800 mm cross-axle obstacles, and climbs 100 percent gradients. In testing, the FREELANDER 8 set a Guinness World Record for altitude achievement by an electric SUV, completing an ascent to 6,002 meters above sea level.

Safety engineering is built around what the company calls the S·H·I·E·L·D system, with the FREELANDER 8 becoming the first model in its class to secure nine major global safety certifications. The body structure incorporates a 15-beam, 7-post cage design with 90 percent high-strength steel and aluminum content, torsional rigidity of 43,000 N·m per degree, and a 9,800-ton integrated die-cast aluminum floor. The roof can withstand 15.5 tons of pressure, and the structure is designed to protect all three rows in an 8.6-ton truck rear-end collision. Eleven airbags are standard, including adaptive units and a third-row side curtain airbag. The CATL battery pack features additional underbody protection with a ballistic-grade polymer coating, delivering 6.7 times the national standard impact resistance.

The FREELANDER 8 has also passed NESTA’s six-dimensional electric safety certification and includes features such as a blind-spot elimination rearview mirror, 2.5D streaming media mirror, cabin air purification, and privacy protection functions. The company states that the vehicle underwent testing across more than 1,000 vehicles worldwide, covering 50-plus road surface types and 1,000-plus user scenarios. In extreme rollover testing, the vehicle maintained structural integrity, with the high-voltage system cutting off automatically and the battery showing zero leakage or thermal runaway.
