Chinese AI Model Makers Move into E-Commerce, Selling Token Subscriptions on Tmall

Several Chinese artificial intelligence model developers are bringing their token-based subscription services to Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace, signaling a shift in how AI products are sold to mainstream consumers. According to a report from Shanghai Securities News on September 5, companies such as Kimi, MiniMax, and StepFun are in talks with Tmall to open official flagship stores where users can purchase token packages for their AI services.

The move follows an earlier entry by Zhipu AI, which became the first domestic AI model maker to launch an official storefront on Tmall on September 2. The company’s GLM Coding Plan subscription is now available for purchase directly on the platform. Just a day later, Tmall introduced a dedicated “Token Recharge Center” that aggregates offerings from five AI providers — Alibaba Cloud, Zhipu AI, Kimi, MiniMax, and DeepSeek. While Alibaba Cloud and Zhipu AI have established their own brand flagship stores, the other three companies are currently selling through authorized agents on the platform.

This development marks a notable step in the commercialization of large language model services in China, as AI companies increasingly look beyond developer-focused channels and toward familiar consumer shopping environments. By listing token subscriptions on Tmall, these firms hope to tap into the sprawling e-commerce ecosystem’s vast user base, simplifying access for both individual developers and businesses that rely on AI capabilities.

For years, consumer access to advanced AI models often required technical fluency, direct integrations, or specialized platforms. Tmall’s new token storefronts change that equation: a user can now browse, compare, and acquire AI usage quotas in the same way they would buy software licenses or digital services on an e-commerce site. The convenience could widen the audience for these tools, bringing advanced AI to students, freelancers, small teams, and hobbyist developers who previously faced friction when signing up.

Alibaba Cloud’s participation is particularly significant, given the company’s dual role as both an AI provider and the operator of Tmall’s parent group, Alibaba. Zhipu AI’s early move also underscores its strategy of aggressive market expansion, as Beijing-based Zhipu continues to build out GLM’s ecosystem amid intensifying competition in China’s crowded AI field.

The expansion into e-commerce does not stop with these initial five providers. Reports indicate that additional players, including Kimi, MiniMax, and StepFun, are actively preparing their official entries. As more model makers join the platform, Tmall could emerge as a central marketplace for AI services, offering a standardized retail experience for a product category that is still young but quickly evolving.

Token packages are typically sold based on usage volume, let users access the models without managing server costs or underlying infrastructure. This billing model is familiar to cloud customers, but the introduction of such plans to mainstream retail represents a new phase of AI democratization — from enterprise sales to everyday digital purchases.

The transition is not without challenges. E-commerce users expect intuitive product descriptions, transparent pricing, and direct post-sale support, all of which differ from the technical procurement processes typical of AI services. How the companies adapt to this retail environment will be closely watched by industry analysts.

Overall, as competition among Chinese AI developers intensifies, distribution is becoming just as important as model quality. Tmall’s rapid integration of token subscriptions into its platform may well set a precedent for how AI consumption becomes a routine part of the digital economy.
