North China Electric Power University Claims First Gold in Humanoid Robot Freestyle Combat

On August 26, the second World Humanoid Robot Games’ freestyle combat event took place in Suzhou, where the team from North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) secured the inaugural gold medal in the 40-kilogram category. Piloting a Unitree G1 robot, they outperformed the home squad from Unitree Robotics itself, the robot’s manufacturer, in a tightly contested showdown.
The competition utilized identical robot bodies across all entrants, shifting the focus entirely to algorithmic sophistication and motion-control precision. Over the course of three rounds, the NCEPU robot distinguished itself through faster recovery from balance disruptions and more exact maneuvering, ultimately edging out its rivals. This year, the event was upgraded from an exhibition to an official competitive discipline, featuring multiple weight classes to accommodate a broader range of participants.
Speaking after the victory, team captain Gao Xin attributed the win to the robot’s robust stability and the squad’s adept handling of in-the-moment challenges. He noted that while raw power mattered, it was the seamless integration of software and real-time adjustments that made the difference. The result highlighted a growing trend in robotics where software intelligence increasingly trumps hardware advantages, a philosophy that the NCEPU team leveraged to great effect against the manufacturer’s own entry.
The freestyle combat format, which emphasizes dynamic movement and rapid tactical responses, drew significant attention from both engineering circles and the public.
