Jack Ma Resurfaces in Xinjiang, Capping a Summer of Public Appearances

On August 10, 2026, Alibaba founder Jack Ma was spotted by netizens on the Bayanbulak Grassland in Xinjiang, marking his latest public sighting in a summer full of unexpected appearances. Dressed in a red-and-black plaid shirt, a white baseball cap, and holding a coffee cup, Ma appeared relaxed and at ease. Earlier the same day, other social media users captured him walking out of the Kuqa Prince Hotel with only a small entourage, underscoring the low-key nature of his itinerary. Based on the locations, observers speculate that Ma was traveling along the Duku Highway, one of China’s most scenic routes, which stretches from Kuqa to the Bayanbulak Grassland.

Since officially announcing his retirement in 2019, Ma has rarely appeared in public. Yet the past few months have seen a notable flurry of sightings. In late July, he was photographed at Harbin’s Saint Sophia Square, wearing a casual white T-shirt and black pants, despite being masked and capped. This marked his first visit to Harbin in seven years—his previous trip in 2019 had been a high-profile business mission, where he famously declared that Alibaba would “invest beyond the Shanhai Pass”.

In mid-July, Ma was spotted attending the 2026 World Cup final in the United States, seated in the stands and chatting with Lenovo chairman Yang Yuanqing. Notably, he avoided the VIP section, instead blending into the crowd in a plain white T-shirt. In June, he led a group of Alibaba and Ant Group executives—including CEO Wu Yongming and others—to plant rice seedlings in the countryside outside Hangzhou, a symbolic act widely interpreted as a metaphor for long-term AI investment.

Perhaps the most significant appearance came in March, when Ma gathered Alibaba and Ant Group’s core management at the Yungu School in Hangzhou—his first public of 2026. During that visit, he engaged in deep discussions with educators about the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. Ma remarked that “the AI era has arrived rapidly, and its impact on society is beyond imagination,” adding that “no one is fully prepared”. He emphasized that children, with their capacity for change and hope, are the ones best positioned to adapt.

Industry analysts have noted that Ma’s appearances may be closely tied to Alibaba’s strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence. While Ma no longer holds an operational role at the company, insiders suggest he remains deeply involved in shaping Alibaba’s AI and strategic decision-making. This aligns with Alibaba’s recent moves: in March, the company consolidated its various AI brands under the unified “Qwen” banner, and in May, it announced a RMB 380 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure over the next three years. By the first quarter of 2026, Alibaba’s AI-related revenue had surpassed RMB 35.8 billion on an annualized basis, accounting for over 30% of Alibaba Cloud’s total revenue.

Ma’s summer itinerary—from the rice paddies of Hangzhou to the grasslands of Xinjiang—paints a picture of a founder who has stepped back from day-to-day operations yet remains symbolically present at key moments. Whether his recent public appearances signal a more active advisory role in Alibaba’s AI transformation or simply reflect a personal preference for travel and exploration, one thing is clear: even in semiretirement, Jack Ma continues to command public attention. His August 10 sighting in Xinjiang, coming on the heels of a global World Cup appearance and a return to Harbin, suggests that the Alibaba founder is far from disappearing from the public eye—and that his every move will continue to be scrutinized for clues about the company’s future direction.
